Derecho Came Through Town
Like so many other communities throughout the midwest Cumming was hit with a derecho on Monday, August 10th. I don't know about you but before the storm, I had never even heard of this term, derecho. It is described as a storm producing strong winds over 68 mph and extends more than 250 miles. This particular storm had reported gusts of wind over 100 mph, moved over 700 miles and lasted for 14 hours.
We were lucky here in Cumming to have only sustained minimal damage and some down trees. We were without power for only a few hours while there are thousands still without power, days later. I saw the community pull together with the little things, like finding missing property to larger things such as, rushing to the aid of an elderly neighbor in need. My heart swelled to see people pulling together helping their neighbors and reaffirmed my love for this community! We are looking into removing debris from the storm. When I know more, I will let you know. If you, or anyone you know is in need please contact City Hal at 981-9214 or email deputyclerk@cumming.iowa.com |
